Rheostat with toroidally wound resistance wire on a ceramic former with most of the wire enclosed. A rotary contactor allows the resistance to be varied to control a current or it can be used as a potentiometer. Rotary rheostats are circular and the wiper contact rotates. These often used in power applications. Due to their small size, rotary rheostats are used more than linear rheostats.
