It is a potentiometer it is a three terminal resister with a sliding or rotating contact that forms and adjustable voltage divider if only our two terminals are used one end and the wiper it ask is a variable resistor or rheostat.
2-Range Potentiometer 0-16mV and 16-64mV with Galvanometer
Battery (6V probably corroded if inside) operated in wooden case.
Solid Oak box would look beautiful with professional TLC applied to metal, bakelite and wood.
